Donald Trump Didn’t Call Him “Lyin’ Ted” For Nothin’ http://correctrecord.org/donald-trump-didnt-call-him-lyin-ted-for-nothin/ Wed, 20 Jul 2016 23:00:39 +0000 http://correctrecord.org/?p=2783 Were he alive today, Honest Abe would be disappointed in the evolution of his party. Like the Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump himself, Ted Cruz is far from a truth-teller. A quick look at Cruz’s record shows that the senator rightfully earned the nickname “Lyin’ Ted.”

TED CRUZ FALSELY CLAIMED THAT THE MAJORITY OF CRIMINALS ARE DEMOCRATS

Ted Cruz: “The overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats.” “Now listen, here’s the simple and undeniable fact. The overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats. The media doesn’t report that. What they report, and there’s a reason why the Democrats for years have been viewed as soft on crime, because they go in and they appoint to the bench judges who release violent criminals. They go in, and they do what Barack Obama tried to do, which is appoint a lawyer voluntarily represented for free, a cop killer, to a senior Justice Department position. They go in and fight to give the right to vote to convicted felons. Why? Because the Democrats know convicted felons tend to vote Democrat.” [Hugh Hewitt Show, 11/30/15]

  • Washington Post: “Cruz is wildly off base… He can’t prove what he claims.” “Cruz is wildly off base when he claims that across the United States the ‘overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats.’ The data that are the source of his statement were based on the party registrations of mostly black and Hispanic prisoners in just three states — and do not make a distinction between violent and nonviolent felons. In other words, the study does not show what Cruz claimed; in fact the authors specifically rejected his statement as a misinterpretation of their findings. He can’t prove what he claims with such great certainty and thus earns Four Pinocchios.” [Washington Post, 12/1/15]

TED CRUZ LIED ABOUT PLANNED PARENTHOOD

Ted Cruz said that Planned Parenthood was “profiting from the buying and selling of the body parts of babies.” “I encourage my colleagues to continue to fight to defund this organization that places more value on the sale price of babies’ body parts than it does on the sanctity of human life. We should not rest until we have done everything in our power to protect the life of unborn children. Ensuring no additional federal dollars go to the abortion industry or Planned Parenthood is a good place to start. This is why it is critical that we stand together to insist that not another dollar of our hard-earned money goes to a group profiting from the buying and selling of the body parts of babies.” [Senator Ted Cruz press release, 8/3/15]

  • Investigations in 12 states cleared Planned Parenthood of charges that it profited off of the sale of fetal tissue. “Planned Parenthood acknowledges that one of its clinics in each of two states – Washington and California – supplies fetal tissue to researchers but says they comply with federal law barring a financial profit from the transactions. […] A medical ethicist tells us those fees seem to be a ‘reasonable’ reimbursement for the cost of supplying the tissue. An investigation by Washington’s attorney general cleared Planned Parenthood of charges it was profiting from the sales in that state. Investigations in 11 other states also have cleared the organization.” [PolitiFact, 2/8/16]

TED CRUZ LIED ABOUT OBAMACARE

Ted Cruz: “Obamacare…is the biggest job-killer in this country.” CRUZ: “We have seen now in six years of Obamacare that it has been a disaster. It is the biggest job-killer in this country. Millions of Americans have lost their jobs, have been forced into part-time work, have lost their health insurance, have lost their doctors, have seen their premiums skyrocket.” [Republican presidential debate, 1/28/16]

  • PolitiFact: “By every measure, millions more people are working and millions fewer are stuck unwillingly in part-time work since the time the Affordable Care Act became law.” “Cruz said that Obamacare cost the country millions of jobs and had forced millions into working part-time. The government’s employment surveys show no sign of that occurring. By every measure, millions more people are working and millions fewer are stuck unwillingly in part-time work since the time the Affordable Care Act became law. The law might have affected part-time work for certain kinds of people, but that didn’t change the improvement in the overall numbers. Many of these numbers, especially the well-reported unemployment rate, are readily available and independent economic studies uncovered no sign that job growth has suffered at all under the new health care law. Cruz turned familiar data upside down. We rate this claim Pants on Fire.” [PolitiFact, 1/29/16]

  • Associated Press: “Since the time Obama signed the health care law in March 2010, the nation’s jobless rate has fallen from 9.9 percent to 5 percent. The economy has added more than 13 million jobs over that period.” “Lost jobs? Since the time Obama signed the health care law in March 2010, the nation’s jobless rate has fallen from 9.9 percent to 5 percent. The economy has added more than 13 million jobs over that period. Lost insurance? The share of Americans without coverage reached a historic low of 9 percent last year, according to the government’s National Health Interview Survey. More than 16 million people gained coverage since 2013, just before the law’s big coverage expansion got underway.” [Associated Press, 1/29/16]

TED CRUZ LIED ABOUT CLIMATE SCIENCE

Ted Cruz claimed that data shows that climate change “ain’t happening.” “At an August event In California’s Orange County, Cruz told an interviewer, ‘If you look at satellite data for the last 18 years, there’s been zero warming. … The satellite says it ain’t happening.’” [Associated Press, 11/22/15]

  • Satellite data shows continued warming over the past several decades. “Florida State University’s James Elsner said ground data show every decade has been warmer than the last since the middle of the 20th century and satellite data-based observations ‘show continued warming over the past several decades.’ In fact, federal ground-based data, which scientists said is more reliable than satellites, show that 15 of the 17 years after 1997 have been warmer than 1997 and 2015 is on track to top 2014 as the warmest year on record.” [Associated Press, 11/22/15]

  • A climate scientist determined that Ted Cruz “understands less about science (and climate change) than the average kindergartner.” “Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas had the lowest score, an average of 6. All eight put Cruz at the bottom of the class. ‘This individual understands less about science (and climate change) than the average kindergartner,’ Michael Mann, a Pennsylvania State University meteorology professor, wrote of Cruz’s statements. ‘That sort of ignorance would be dangerous in a doorman, let alone a president.’” [Associated Press, 11/22/15]

TED CRUZ LIED ABOUT THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION’S SUPPORT OF TRANSGENDER AMERICANS

Ted Cruz lied about the federal government forcing school districts “to let boys shower with little girls.” “Cruz said the ‘federal government is going after school districts, trying to force them to let boys shower with little girls.’ Cruz’s vision of schoolboys everywhere showering with girls grossly distorts the issue. The fact is the Obama administration has sided with transgender students seeking access to school facilities including locker rooms, holding that anything less would violate federal anti-discrimination requirements. Such conflicts — few and far between — haven’t had to do with the government wanting boys to shower with girls. We rate the claim False.” [PolitiFact, 12/4/15]

Fact check: Ted Cruz lies about Hillary’s comments about Benghazi http://correctrecord.org/fact-check-ted-cruz-lies-about-hillarys-comments-about-benghazi/ Wed, 20 Jul 2016 22:50:04 +0000 http://correct2016.wpengine.com/?p=3912 The Republican National Convention continues, and so do the lies about the Benghazi tragedy. Tonight, former presidential candidate Ted Cruz claimed that Hillary Clinton said “what difference does it make?” when asked about the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi. It’s a gross and common — completely false — right-wing talking point.

LIE: Ted Cruz: “Theirs is the party […] that responds to the death of Americans at Benghazi by asking, ‘What difference does it make?’”

THE TRUTH

FactCheck.org: “Clinton didn’t say that the deaths didn’t make a difference… Republicans… have portrayed the remarks as being uncaring toward the lives lost that night… But Clinton’s full remarks indicate she was concerned about the lives lost.”

Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson led his speech with an oft-used quote from Hillary Clinton on the Sept. 11, 2012, Benghazi attacks, but he left out the full context. […] Former U.S. Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey was more egregious in misrepresenting Clinton’s quote, saying: ‘So I guess about her emails we’re soon gonna hear the same infamous question that we heard about the death of four Americans in Benghazi, what difference at this point does it make?’ Clinton didn’t say that the deaths didn’t make a difference. […] Republicans, like Mukasey, have portrayed the remarks as being uncaring toward the lives lost that night. Johnson himself went on to describe in his speech several victims of terrorists attacks, saying ‘it made a difference’ to them. But Clinton’s full remarks indicate she was concerned about the lives lost.

Fact check: Lyin’ Ted lies and fear mongers about Syrian refugees http://correctrecord.org/fact-check-lyin-ted-lies-and-fear-mongers-about-syrian-refugees/ Wed, 20 Jul 2016 22:37:19 +0000 http://correct2016.wpengine.com/?p=3910 Senator Ted Cruz kept his reputation as Lyin’ Ted tonight when he said our country needs to stop “admitting ISIS terrorists as refugees.” He’s lying and attempting to instill fear.

LIE: Ted Cruz: “We deserve an immigration system that puts America first. And yes, builds a wall to keep us safe. That stops admitting ISIS terrorists as refugees.”

THE TRUTH

New York Times: “Syrians must pass many layers of security checks before being admitted to the United States, a process that can take two years or longer.”

Syrians must pass many layers of security checks before being admitted to the United States, a process that can take two years or longer. In most cases, the refugees do not enter the United States until the very end. They are also subject to an additional layer of checks beyond those for refugees of other nationalities; after the Paris attacks, the House voted to further tighten screening procedures. Since 2011, the United States has admitted fewer than 2,000 Syrian refugees.

PolitiFact: “There’s no real precedent of a terrorist slipping in through the [refugee] vetting system.”

Their names, biographical information and fingerprints are run through federal terrorism and criminal databases. Meanwhile, the refugees are interviewed by Department of Homeland Security officials. If approved, they then undergo a medical screening, a match with sponsor agencies, ‘cultural orientation’ classes and one final security clearance. Syrian refugees in particular must clear one additional hurdle. Their documents are placed under extra scrutiny and cross-referenced with classified and unclassified information. The process typically takes one to two years or longer and happens before a refuge ever steps onto American soil. Ultimately, says the State Department, about half are approved, and there’s no real precedent of a terrorist slipping in through the vetting system.

Associated Press: Refugee vetting is “a drawn-out process that includes in-person interviews overseas and involves multiple agencies, led by Homeland Security.”

Late last year, the Obama administration for the first time disclosed details about how refugees are investigated. Officials described a drawn-out process that includes in-person interviews overseas and involves multiple agencies, led by Homeland Security. Refugees must submit to interviews before they can come, and provide biographical details about themselves — their families, friendships, social or political activities, employment, telephone numbers, email accounts and more. They also provide biometric information, including fingerprints. Syrians are subject to additional, classified controls that officials have declined to describe specifically. Refugee processing generally takes 18 months to 24 months. It can be longer for Syrians.

Trump’s newly-minted position as presumptive GOP nominee has fellow Republicans predicting that the Party “will get destroyed” and others  “rac[ing] to distance themselves from Mr. Trump” by any means possible.

While it’s not clear what the GOP is going to do about the Party’s demise from within, one thing is clear: #NeverTrump became #EventuallyTrump and now the GOP has officially stamped what they like to call the “party of Lincoln” the #PartyofTrump. “The comb-overthrow of the Republican party is complete.”

TRUMP, CRUZ: NOT-SO-HAPPY EARTH DAY http://correctrecord.org/trump-cruz-not-so-happy-earth-day/ Fri, 22 Apr 2016 17:31:26 +0000 http://correct2016.wpengine.com/?p=2540 GOP candidates’ abysmal positions on the environment

As we celebrate Earth Day and recognize our efforts to make sure our planet is in a better place than when we found it, it is a good time to take a look at the GOP candidates’ positions on the environment. From claiming that climate change “was created by and for the Chinese” and outright denying the science behind climate change to promising to end regulation of greenhouse gas emissions and abolishing the Environmental Protection Agency, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz wish you a not-so-happy Earth Day.

Trump, Cruz on Climate Change

Donald Trump: “I don’t believe in climate change.” “During a Thursday morning interview on CNN’s ‘New Day,’ the New York real estate developer said that bad floods and other abnormal weather patterns have happened in the past, and the media fixated too much on the issue. ‘You can’t watch the news anymore. It’s always weather,’ said Mr. Trump, who added that China hasn’t done anything to address climate change. ‘I believe in clean air. Immaculate air,’ Mr. Trump said. ‘But I don’t believe in climate change.’” [Wall Street Journal, 9/24/15]

Donald Trump on climate change: “‘It’s called weather changes and you have storm and you have rain and you have beautiful days.” “Last month, Trump insisted that he was ‘not a believer in climate change,’ claiming that extreme weather patterns scientists attribute to man-made climate changes are simply ‘weather.’ ‘It’s called weather changes and you have storm and you have rain and you have beautiful days,’ Trump said.” [CNN, 10/19/15]

Donald Trump: “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese.” “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.” [@realDonaldTrump, 11/6/12, 2:25 p.m. EDT]

Ted Cruz said people who believe global warming is real are “the equivalent of the flat-Earthers.” “Cruz, the red-meat Texas senator with an army of conservative followers, raised eyebrows on Tuesday when he told the Texas Tribune that people who believe global warming is real are ‘the equivalent of the flat-Earthers’. ‘It used to be it is accepted scientific wisdom the Earth is flat, and this heretic named Galileo was branded a denier,’ Cruz said.” [Guardian,3/27/15]

Ted Cruz said climate scientists were “cooking the books” to support climate change. “Sen. Ted Cruz on Sunday said facts don’t support climate change, in a speech that described the notion as a front for power-hungry politicians who want to control Americans’ lives. […] Instead, Cruz said, government researchers are reverse engineering data sets to falsify changes in the climate. ‘They’re cooking the books. They’re actually adjusting the numbers,’ Cruz said. ‘Enron used to do their books the same way.’ Cruz said scientists four decades ago were studying ‘global cooling, a global ice age was coming,’ and they were as wrong as those who now say the earth is warming.” [TIME,8/2/15]

Ted Cruz said his administration would end the regulation of greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles. “A Cruz Administration will identify all unnecessary programs – these 25 are merely a start: Eliminate the following Agencies, Bureaus, Commissions, and programs: […] Regulation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Vehicles” [Cruz for President, 11/10/15]

Ted Cruz voted against legislation that would declare that climate change is man-made. “The Senate on Wednesday twice rejected measures declaring that humans are causing climate change. But in the course of those votes, 15 Republicans, including Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, voted yes. Mr. Paul, who is considered a likely presidential contender next year, was joined by Senators Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Jeff Flake of Arizona, among others. Two other potential Republican presidential candidates, Senators Marco Rubio of Florida and Ted Cruz of Texas, voted no. It was the first time in years that senators had voted on a climate change measure, and it came in the course of a debate on a bill forcing approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline.” [New York Times, 1/21/15]

Trump, Cruz on Environmental Safety and Conservation

Donald Trump said he would cut the Environmental Protection Agency. “Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Sunday that he would cut government agencies if he were elected President. Among them? The Department of Education and the Environmental Protection Agency, Trump told ‘Fox News Sunday’ host Chris Wallace.’” [Talking Points Memo, 10/18/15]

Donald Trump said that water regulations lead to “showers where I can’t wash my hair properly, it’s a disaster!” “When Donald Trump was asked about EPA water regulations at a rally in South Carolina, he talked about the way they personally affect his life: by harming his ability to wash his signature hairdo. At an event in Aiken, South Carolina Saturday afternoon, Trump was asked what he thought of regulations by the Environmental Protection Agency on waterways in the United States. ‘I’ll give you one regulation,’ Trump said, launching into an example of how strict environmental rules can hurt everyday Americans with great hair. ‘So I build, and I build a lot of stuff. And I go into areas where they have tremendous water… And you have sinks where the water doesn’t come out…. You have showers where I can’t wash my hair properly, it’s a disaster!’ he said, to laughter from the crowd. ‘It’s true,’ Trump continued. ‘They [the showerheads] have restrictors put in. The problem is you stay under the shower for five times as long.’” [TIME Magazine, 12/12/15]

Ted Cruz said he would abolish the Department of Energy. “Abolish the IRS, the Department of Education, the Department of Energy, the Department of Commerce, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. A Cruz Administration will appoint heads of each of those agencies whose sole charge will be to wind them down and determine whether any programs need to be preserved.” [Cruz for President, 11/10/15]

Ted Cruz said that “volunteer conservation” was “the way the system ought to work.” “Asked about the Environmental Protection Agency, Cruz also advocated for ‘volunteer conservation’ as the ‘the way the system ought to works’ He decried federal efforts to expand regulatory oversight of water. ‘The EPA is trying to turn irrigation ditches into lakes and rivers and oceans,’ he said.” [Politico, 3/7/15]

Trump, Cruz on Alternative Energy

Donald Trump: “Wind farms are hurting the country.” “Trump: Right now, green energy is way behind the times. You look at the windmills that are destroying shorelines all over the world. Economically, they’re not good. It’s a very, very poor form of energy. Solar, as you know, hasn’t caught on because, I mean, a solar panel takes 32 years — it’s a 32-year payback. Who wants a 32-year payback? The fact is, the technology is not there yet. Wind farms are hurting the country.” [Fox News’ On The Record, 3/16/12]

Donald Trump: “We’re practically not allowed to use coal any more.” “Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough broke from questions about Muslims and immigration recently to ask Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump about another issue: what he would do about climate change. Trump initially responded by saying he wanted clean air and water. When Richard Haass, Council on Foreign Relations president and a panelist on the show, noted those are environmental concerns not directly related to climate change, Trump went on to tout the ‘many’ environmental awards his company had won for building projects. After more prodding, Trump said, ‘Remember this. We’re practically not allowed to use coal any more. What do we do with our coal? We ship it to China and they spew it in the air.’” [PolitiFact, 12/15/15]

Ted Cruz introduced legislation to repeal the Renewable Fuel Standard. “Cruz has introduced legislation that would repeal the renewable fuel standard over the next five years. The standard mandates that gasoline contain 10 percent ethanol by volume. ‘I believe we should pursue an all-of-the-above energy policy and that Washington shouldn’t be picking winners and losers,’ he said. Cruz argues the fuel standard has proven unworkable and costly, according to a summary of his bill. He says it ignores the problem of an insufficient supply of biofuels to meet the standard.” [The Hill, 8/6/14]

Ted Cruz said the federal wind tax credit was akin to “corporate welfare.” “The Texans used almost identical language to describe their opposition to the RFS, saying it amounts to the government ‘picking winners and losers.’ During his conversation with Rastetter, Cruz extended the criticism to the federal wind tax credit, likening it to the ‘corporate welfare’ he has long opposed out of principle.” [Texas Tribune, 3/7/15]

CTR STATEMENT ON CRUZ’S WISCONSIN WIN http://correctrecord.org/ctr-statement-on-cruzs-wisconsin-win/ Wed, 06 Apr 2016 01:25:55 +0000 http://correct2016.wpengine.com/?p=2479 Washington, DC – Correct The Record President Brad Woodhouse released the following statement in response to tonight’s Republican primary results.

“Tonight, Senator Ted Cruz won the Wisconsin Republican primary; but make no mistake, this is still the Party of Trump,” said Brad Woodhouse, President of Correct The Record. “Cruz might be the regrettable choice of the Republican establishment, but just like frontrunner Donald Trump, he espouses the same hateful, discriminatory rhetoric and supports the same extreme anti-women and anti-immigrant policies. No matter who they try to make their nominee, one thing is certain — the Republican Party is following Trump’s lead.”
