But let’s be clear: While Senator Rubio may be trying to keep his distance, he can’t run away from his support for Trump, along with his divisive rhetoric, dangerous temperament, and constant lies.

“Except Marco Rubio,” man yells. (He’s a Senator. But details…)— Katy Tur (@KatyTurNBC) November 2, 2016
“What will it take for Marco Rubio to denounce Donald Trump? How low does the Donald have to go? Today, in St. Augustine, Trump literally insulted our men and women in uniform by openly disparaging the brave, U.S.-led effort to retake Mosul from the ISIS. This is Trump’s latest unprecedented and unpatriotic attack on our military and our country. Trump is now trying to win the White House by disparaging our country’s fight against ISIS and spinning a weird web of lies that the system is rigged against him. The question now is will Rubio continue to support Trump’s divisive paranoia and offensive attacks—or will he stand up for the people of Florida and American democracy itself?”
“Defending Donald Trump should be disqualifying. These Republican Senate candidates have betrayed the American people by aiding and abetting Donald Trump’s disturbing and disgusting presidential campaign,” said Brad Woodhouse, President of Correct The Record. “These five candidates have been Trump’s stooges for months—and we’re not going to let them get away with it. Correct The Record will expose these candidates as Trumpkins directly responsible for The Donald’s disgraceful political rhetoric and toxic policy positions.”
For months, these Republican elected officials have ignored their constituents and cravenly lined up behind Trump’s presidential bid. In the process, they have helped support—and legitimize—Trump’s deeply offensive attacks on women, individuals with disabilities, communities of color and our democracy itself. Just a few weeks ago, Sen. Ayotte said Trump “absolutely” was a role model for children and Sen. Rubio has proudly said “we have to make sure that Donald wins this election.” Sen. Toomey stood with Trump even after he mocked a reporter with disabilities, attacked immigrants and demonized Muslim Americans. Sen. Burr has gone even further saying Trump has “done a tremendous job.” And Indiana Senate candidate Todd Young continues to defend Trump even after the Republican nominee viciously attacked federal judge—and fellow Hoosier—Gonzalo Curiel for his Mexican heritage.
Watch the new videos:
For months, Correct The Record has held Trump accountable for his campaign of lies, bigoted rhetoric and relentless and disturbing attacks on our democracy. As part of CTR’s overall effort to elect Hillary Clinton our next president, Correct The Record will expand these efforts by exposing Republican Senate candidates’ records of defending, praising and enabling Trump. The American people deserve much better than Trump and his GOP enablers. Instead of candidates who will kowtow to an unhinged, serial liar, voters want leaders who will stand up for American families and work to build an economy where everyone can succeed.
]]>After months away from the presidential campaign trail, tonight Marco Rubio returns to the spotlight. Rubio will address the Republican National Convention in Cleveland via video. In case you forgot, Rubio (like The Donald) has lied about nearly everything from Hillary Clinton’s stance on choice to his own family history. Most egregiously, during the Republican presidential campaign (which he lost), Rubio insisted that Clinton “put classified information on her computer because she thinks she’s above the law.” That lie has been completely obliterated not only by The Washington Post’s Factchecker but by FBI Director James Comey.
Here’s a quick refresher on Rubio’s record of lies:
Marco Rubio: Hillary Clinton “believes that all abortion should be legal, even on the due date of that unborn child.”
Here’s what I find outrageous. There has been five Democratic debates. The media has not asked them a single question on abortion and on abortion, the Democrats are extremists. Why doesn’t the media ask Hillary Clinton why she believes that all abortion should be legal, even on the due date of that unborn child.
Rubio said Clinton ‘believes that all abortion should be legal, even on the due date of that unborn child.’ Clinton does not believe that all abortion should be legal. Instead, she’s said she supports restrictions on late-term abortions except in cases of rape, incest and when the mother’s life and health are in danger. That’s not the same thing as unequivocally supporting abortions ‘even on the due date’ of the child. Such an abortion would be a purely hypothetical scenario; doctors said such a procedure doesn’t make sense medically. We rate Rubio’s claim False.
PolitiFact: “Rubio’s conclusion that Clinton supports due-date abortions is not backed by evidence and logically unsound.”
We should note that those who want a total abortion ban — a position that Rubio has expressed — see exceptions made for rape, incest and health as loopholes that undermine late-term restrictions. Advocating for exceptions could theoretically encompass a due-date abortion, but Rubio’s conclusion that Clinton supports due-date abortions is not backed by evidence and logically unsound.
PolitiFact: “Clinton is open to restrictions on late-term abortions provided there are exceptions for the life and health of the mother.”
In short, Clinton is open to restrictions on late-term abortions provided there are exceptions for the life and health of the mother. This includes both mental health and medical complications like preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication of high blood pressure that could lead to death.
Marco Rubio: Hillary Clinton “put classified information on her computer because she thinks she’s above the law.”
She put classified information on her computer because she thinks she’s above the law and anyone who lies to the families of people who have lost their loved ones in the service of our country like she did in Benghazi, can never be the commander-in-chief of the United States of America.
‘She [Hillary Clinton] put classified information on her computer because she thinks she’s above the law.’ –Rubio Rubio’s phrasing suggests that Clinton purposely put classified information on her emails. There has been no evidence to show that is the case.
FBI Director Comey: There was not evidence to show “that she knew she was receiving classified information.”
I do not believe there’s evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that she knew she was receiving classified information in violation of the requirements… She did in fact — there is, in my view, not evidence beyond certainly probable cause. There’s not evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that she knew she was receiving classified information or that she intended to retain it on her server.
But on Thursday, his careful explanation that the FBI ‘did not find evidence sufficient to establish that she knew she was sending classified information beyond a reasonable doubt to meet the intent standard’ brought them a measure of relief.
Second, Director Comey testified that the classification markings on these three documents were not proper and did not comply with federal guidelines or manuals. The emails did not have classified headers, and they did not identify the original classifier, agency, office of origin, reason for classification, or date for declassification. Instead, they had only a ‘c’ for ‘confidential’ next to a paragraph further down in the email. Third, Director Comey testified that, based on these facts, it would be a ‘reasonable inference’ fore Secretary Clinton to have ‘immediately’ concluded that these documents were not classified.
FBI Director Comey testified that the improperly marked emails could be reasonably judged as not classified.
MATT CARTWRIGHT: If Secretary Clinton were an expert about what’s classified and not classified and we’re following the manual, the absence of a header would tell her immediately that those three documents were not classified. Am I correct in that? COMEY: That would be a reasonable inference.
QUICK: “Senator Rubio, you yourself have said that you’ve had issues. You have a lack of bookkeeping skills. You accidentally inter-mingled campaign money with your personal money. You faced foreclosure on a second home that you bought. And just last year, you liquidated a $68,000 retirement fund. That’s something that cost you thousands of dollars in taxes and penalties. In terms of all of that, it raises the question whether you have the maturity and wisdom to lead this $17 trillion economy. What do you say?” RUBIO: “Well, you just — you just listed a litany of discredited attacks from Democrats and my political opponents, and I’m not gonna waste 60 seconds detailing them all. But I’m going to tell you the truth.”
Marco Rubio failed to disclose a $135,000 home equity loan he obtained from a bank controlled by his political supporters.
State House Speaker Marco Rubio abruptly amended his financial disclosure forms Friday after The Miami Herald asked why they lacked a $135,000 home equity loan he obtained from a bank controlled by his political supporters.
Marco Rubio double billed the Republican Party of Florida and taxpayers as Florida House Speaker.
One day after the Herald/Times received travel records from the state, U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio’s campaign is admitting that he double billed the Republican Party of Florida and state taxpayers for eight flights while he was House Speaker. ‘Earlier this week in response to a question from the media I stated that all my legislative travel during my tenure as Speaker was paid for by the Republican Party of Florida. However after reviewing hundreds of flights we identified 8 official state business flights which the state properly paid for. These flights total approximately $3,000. Further, it appears several of these flights were also billed to the RPOF.’
Rubio billed the party for more than $100,000 during the two years he served as the state’s House speaker, according to credit card statements obtained by the Miami Herald and St. Petersburg Times. The charges included repairs to his family’s minivan, grocery bills, plane tickets for his wife, and purchases from retailers including a wine store near his home and Apple’s online store. Rubio also charged the party for dozens of meals during the annual lawmaking session in Tallahassee, even though he received taxpayer subsidies for his meals. Rubio said that the billings all related to party business — the minivan, for example, was damaged by a valet at a political function and that he repaid the party about $16,000 in personal expenses.
Marco Rubio: “When I received my statement, I would spend hours trying to figure out which [credit card expenditures] were political, and which were personal.”
I often used my or Jeanette’s personal credit cards to pay for many of the campaign’s expenditures. When I received my statement, I would spend hours trying to figure out which were political, and which were personal.
The records, which cover a 22-month period in 2005 and 2006, combined with previously disclosed credit card statements, show that Rubio charged more than $22,000 in personal expenses to the card while the account incurred more than $1,700 in delinquency and late fees over a four-year period while he was in the Florida legislature.
Florida State Ethics Commission: “The level of negligence exhibited by [Marco Rubio]…is disturbing.”
In 2012, the Florida state ethics commission dismissed a complaint against him for the spending, though an inspector analyzing the claims noted that Rubio was not without some fault. ‘The level of negligence exhibited by Respondent’s confusion between the (Republican Party of Florida) American Express card and his personal MasterCard, together with his failure to recognize the error when reviewing the months’ statements, and his signature on the reimbursement requests, is disturbing,’ the ethics commission advocate wrote.
Marco Rubio faced foreclosure after missing five months of mortgage payments on a home he owned.
Republican U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio is facing foreclosure on a Tallahassee house after missing five months of mortgage payments, according to a lawsuit filed in Leon County Circuit Court. But Rubio’s campaign spokesman said Rubio and David Rivera, a U.S. House candidate from Miami who co-owns the home with Rubio, have paid $9,200 owed to Deutsche Bank and the foreclosure has been withdrawn.
If it was traditional, he would have essentially forfeited more than a third of his withdrawal. […] Rubio’s taxable income probably put him in either the 28% or 33% federal income tax bracket. Let’s assume he’s in the 33% bracket. That means he probably had to pony up roughly $30,000 in taxes and penalties on his IRA cash-out. That means he would have netted only $38,000 from the original $68,000.
Marco Rubio repeatedly claimed that his parents fled Fidel Castro’s Cuba in 1959.
Several times during his race for U.S. Senate, Rubio told reporters and voters his parents left Cuba in 1959, suggesting they had fled Castro’s rule. In his campaign bio, and later in his official Senate biography, he said his parents ‘came to America following Fidel Castro’s takeover.’
During his rise to political prominence, Sen. Marco Rubio frequently repeated a compelling version of his family’s history that had special resonance in South Florida. He was the ‘son of exiles,’ he told audiences, Cuban Americans forced off their beloved island after ‘a thug,’ Fidel Castro, took power. But a review of documents — including naturalization papers and other official records — reveals that the Florida Republican’s account embellishes the facts. The documents show that Rubio’s parents came to the United States and were admitted for permanent residence more than two-and-a-half years before Castro’s forces overthrew the Cuban government and took power on New Year’s Day 1959.
Even after he stumbled over dates with a Miami Herald reporter and acknowledged his parents left before the revolution, his official Web bio stayed the same. After two news organizations reported his parents moved to the United States in 1956, his spokesman acknowledged that the bio was wrong. It was updated to say, ‘Marco was born in Miami in 1971 to Cuban exiles who first arrived in the United States in 1956.’ That puts everyone in agreement: The original statement is False.
Marco Rubio: “We are worse off today than we were five years ago. We have more illegal immigrants here.”
RUBIO: “Look, I tried to fix a problem. This is a real problem. Where are we today? We are worse off today than we were five years ago. We have more illegal immigrants here. We have two unconstitutional executive orders on amnesty. I went to Washington to fix a problem. Immigration is a serious problem. It impacts my state and the state that I live in. We are impacted by illegal immigration in a dramatic way.”
PolitiFact: “There is no evidence to support the idea that the illegal immigrant population has grown in the past five years.”
Rubio said, ‘We have more illegal immigrants here’ than we did five years ago. Multiple estimates show that the illegal immigrant population has stabilized, or even decreased, from its peak in 2007 through 2014, the latest available data. According to Pew, the illegal immigrant population was 11.3 million in 2014, down from 11.4 million five years prior in 2010. This is in sharp contrast to dramatic and steady increases throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. There is no evidence to support the idea that the illegal immigrant population has grown in the past five years. We rate Rubio’s claim False.

]]>Here’s a dose of reality:
The evidence is clear when it comes to access, affordability, and quality the Affordable Care Act is working.
For the last 50 years, Americans have struggled to navigate a health care system that has failed to put patients first. Millions who were uninsured struggled to pay for even a doctor’s visit, while those who had insurance risked losing it when they needed it most. Quality care, especially preventive screenings and checkups that keep people healthy, was a luxury for many. And doctors were encouraged to focus on the amount of care they delivered, rather than effectively treating patients’ big-picture health.
Today, as a nation, we are at the threshold of a truly historic opportunity. The promise of positive transformative change in the U.S. health care system is at hand, thanks to:
The evidence is clear when it comes to access, affordability, and quality the Affordable Care Act is working.
ACCESS
Strong Enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace. On March 31, 2015 about 10.2 million Americans had paid their premiums and had active coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
Historic Reduction in the Uninsured. We have seen the largest reduction in the uninsured in four decades. Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act five years ago, about 16.4 million uninsured people have gained health coverage. Those gains come primarily from the Marketplace, young adults who can stay on their parents’ plans until they turn 26, and Medicaid expansions.
Progress in Fighting Health Inequity. Since 2013, the uninsured rate has declined 9.2 percentage points for African Americans, resulting in 2.3 million adults gaining coverage and 12.3 percentage points for Latinos, resulting in 4.2 million adults gaining coverage. Since 2013, the uninsured rate among women declined 7.7 percentage points, resulting in 7.7 million women gaining coverage. An estimated 55 million women are also benefiting from preventive services coverage with no out-of-pocket costs. And health insurers can no longer discriminate based on gender, so being a woman is no longer a preexisting condition.
Medicaid Expansion. Over 12.3 million additional individuals are enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP as of April 2015, compared to before October 2013. To date, 28 states plus DC have expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. This is one of the areas where we know more can be done. We want to work with all the states that have yet to expand — to get as many people covered as possible.
Reducing Uncompensated Care in Hospitals. As a result of Marketplace coverage and Medicaid expansion, hospital uncompensated care costs were reduced by an estimated $7.4 billion in 2014, compared to what they would have been in the absence of the coverage expansion. Medicaid expansion states account for $5 billion, or 68 percent, of that reduction. If all States fully expanded Medicaid, uncompensated care costs would be about $8.9 billion lower in 2016 than they would be if no additional states expanded Medicaid.
From Coverage to Care. Now that millions of Americans have health coverage, we are working toeducate consumers about their coverage and to reduce barriers so that they can get the care they need to live longer and healthier lives.
AFFORDABILITY
Health Care Coverage is now Affordable for Millions of Americans. Of the about 10.2 million consumers who had paid their premium and had active Marketplace coverage on March 31, 2015, nearly 8.7 million (85 percent) nationwide and 6.4 million in the 34 states with Federally-facilitated Marketplaces received an average premium tax credit of $272 per month. And in 2015, nearly 80 percent of Marketplace shoppers using HealthCare.gov could purchase coverage for $100 or less after tax credits. A recent Commonwealth Fund study found that in 2014, fewer Americans had problems paying medical bills or medical debt, and fewer went without care because they couldn’t afford it. This is the first decline and lowest level in these areas since 2005.
Choice, Competition and Premiums. Insurers have decided that the Marketplace is a good place to do business and as a result, consumers have more choices. Twenty-five percent more issuers joined the Marketplace for the 2015 Open Enrollment, and consumers could choose from an average of 40 health plans, up from 30 in 2014. Studies show more issuers are associated with more affordable premiums.
Health Care Cost Growth Has Slowed Sharply. Since the Affordable Care Act became law, the price of health care has risen at the slowest rate in 50 years. Medicare has paid out nearly $316 billion less through 2013 than it would have had previous trends continued. The average premium for employer-based family coverage rose just 3 percent in nominal terms in 2014. Just more than a decade ago, surveys by the Kaiser Family Foundation frequently registered double-digit premium increases for this type of coverage.
QUALITY
Improved Patient Safety. Since 2011, patient harms like hospital-acquired conditions, pressure ulcers, central line associated infections, falls and traumas have fallen by 17 percent, saving an estimated50,000 lives and $12 billion dollars.
Fewer Avoidable Hospital Readmissions. The Medicare all-cause 30-day readmission rate fell to approximately 17.5 percent in 2013, translating to an estimated 150,000 fewer hospital readmissionsamong Medicare beneficiaries between January 2012 and December 2013.
Alternative Care Models are Driving Value. Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) are groups of providers and insurers who work together to put patients in the center of their care and create better health outcomes. Today, more than one in every 14 Americans gets their health care from one of more than 700 ACOs established by Medicare and other payers. ACOs have generated a combined$417 million in savings for Medicare. In addition, the Pioneer ACO model has been certified as the first patient care model to meet the stringent criteria for expansion to a larger population of Medicare beneficiaries.
Higher Quality Coverage. After years of dropped coverage, flimsy plans and barriers to care, everyone’s coverage has improved because consumers have new protections, including those who get health insurance through their employers. They can’t be turned away because of pre-existing conditions; they can’t be dropped just because they get sick and insurance has to cover care that Americans count on like trips to the emergency room, prescriptions and preventive services.
We are transforming the way Americans get health care and they have sent a clear message that the Affordable Care Act’s benefits are needed, wanted, and liked.
