“Donald Trump just finished a rally in North Carolina, where his party has attempted to suppress the rights of thousands of voters. The Republican Party is proud of their efforts to make it harder to vote in the state: limiting early voting, avoiding the placement of voting sites from college campuses and cancelling the registration of thousands of voters, with an outsize effect on African American voters. These efforts by North Carolina Republicans reflect the racist and un-American tone of Donald Trump’s campaign, and it’s happening in the very place where Americans should be able to freely exercise their rights without intimidation—the voting booth.”

NYT Opinion: Five Ways Republicans Are Threatening Voting Rights

In North Carolina, where a court in July struck down a 2013 voter ID law whose restrictions took aim at black voters, Republicans on local election boards are busily cutting back early and Sunday voting hours, which are disproportionately used by African Americans.

After the ruling, Democrats raised alarm when the executive director of the state Republican Party emailed GOP activists suggesting each county election board’s Republicans work to limit early voting hours, curtail Sunday voting and avoid placing voting sites on college campuses. This set up a battle over early voting plans in a third of the state’s counties.

All by Myself: Trump Visits Florida http://correctrecord.org/all-by-myself-trump-visits-florida/ Wed, 02 Nov 2016 21:27:29 +0000 http://correctrecord.org/?p=4500 Donald Trump loves to brag about the huge turnout at his rallies. But today in Orlando, the biggest story was who wasn’t there. Florida Senator Marco Rubio (who is voting for Trump) and local Republican Members of Congress Dan Webster, John Mica and Bill Posey all failed to show up. The only major Florida Republican elected official who made it? The scandal-plagued Attorney General Pam Bondi, who took an illegal donation from the Trump Foundation around the same time she decided not to investigate the fraudulent Trump University.  It’s just the latest sign of how toxic Trump has become–even to his own supporters—and his campaign’s broader failure to consolidate Republican support behind his candidacy.

But let’s be clear: While Senator Rubio may be trying to keep his distance, he can’t run away from his support for Trump, along with his divisive rhetoric, dangerous temperament, and constant lies.

OF COURSE PAM BONDI IS THERE!

…BUT NO TRUMP-ENDORSER RUBIO?

CTR Statement on Trump’s Rally in Geneva, Ohio http://correctrecord.org/ctr-statement-on-trumps-rally-in-geneva-ohio/ Fri, 28 Oct 2016 02:06:56 +0000 http://correctrecord.org/?p=4482 Washington, D.C. — This evening, Correct The Record Communications director Elizabeth Shappell released the following statement on Donald Trump’s rally in Geneva, Ohio:

Tonight, we are thankful that Governor Mike Pence and those traveling with him are safe after a rough landing on a runway in New York.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump was in Ohio at his final rally of the day, repeating his bullying and destructive rhetoric. Through his hateful insults and divisive words, Trump paints a dark picture for our children. In classrooms across the country, educators are reporting more instances of bullying and more instances of fear among immigrant and Muslim-American students. This Trump Effect, as labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center, is already negatively impacting our children. We simply cannot allow him to drag our children down into the dark alternate reality where it’s ok to ignore the truth and bully and insult others.

Two professional psychoanalysts discuss the tactics of a bully, including putting others on the defensive when the bully feels backed against a wall — such as when being questioned by the press. These psychoanalysts’ opinions, backed by years of research and fieldwork, speak directly to Donald Trump’s habit of name-calling his opponents and paint a dark picture of how he could divide our nation as President.

Trump’s Hollow Jobs Message: In Fact, Trump Has Left “Nothing But Ruins Everywhere He’s Gone” http://correctrecord.org/trumps-hollow-jobs-message-in-fact-trump-has-left-nothing-but-ruins-everywhere-hes-gone/ Thu, 27 Oct 2016 18:58:09 +0000 http://correctrecord.org/?p=4480 Donald Trump tried to talk “jobs, jobs, jobs” in Springfield, Ohio today—claiming that would be his primary focus if elected president. But job creation is another reason why Americans should be wary of a Trump presidency. Trump has a history of swindling small business owners out of money owed, destroying communities through lost jobs and unfulfilled promises, and treating his employees as second class citizens–across the country.

Take a look:

CNN MONEY: TRUMP’S ECONOMIC PLANS WOULD COST THE U.S. 3.5 MILLION JOBS

Just how bad would it get? The downturn under a President Trump would last longer than the Great Recession. About 3.5 million Americans would lose their jobs, unemployment would jump back to 7%, home prices would fall, and the stock market would plummet, Moody’s predicts.

NEWSWEEK: “HOW DONALD TRUMP DITCHED U.S. STEEL WORKERS IN FAVOR OF CHINA”

A Newsweek investigation has found that in at least two of Trump’s last three construction projects, Trump opted to purchase his steel and aluminum from Chinese manufacturers rather than United States corporations based in states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin. In other instances, he abandoned steel altogether, instead choosing the far-less-expensive option of buying concrete from various companies, including some linked to the Luchese and Genovese crime families.

NEW JERSEY

”LEFT NOTHING BUT RUINS EVERYWHERE HE’S GONE”

Paul Friel’s dad was “living the American Dream.” His family cabinet-making business had grown, and Donald Trump hired it to make all the cabinetry in his new Trump Plaza in Atlantic City. But after the job was done, Trump refused to pay the full amount of what was owed. Friel’s father filed a lawsuit, but his lawyer advised him the legal fees would outweigh the cost of the cabinet work. Friel decided to cut his losses and drop the suit — but Trump blacklisted Friel’s company anyway. Friel eventually had to lay off many of his workers, who had become his family. “Donald Trump thinks he can make America great again, but he’s left nothing but ruins everywhere he’s gone,” Paul says.

FORMER ATLANTIC CITY MAYOR: TRUMP FIT PERFECTLY IN A “CARNIVAL TOWN”

Jim Whelan, now a New Jersey state senator, was the mayor of Atlantic City, New Jersey, from 1990-2001. While Trump tends to gloss over his business failures in Atlantic City, Sen. Whelan remembers them well. In this video, he tells the story of those left behind: the contractors who got shortchanged, the workers who lost their jobs, the companies that closed their doors because of Trump’s business practices.

HOW BAD OF A BUSINESSMAN IS DONALD TRUMP? HERE’S HOW.

How bad of a businessman is Donald Trump? Two experts, and one person impacted by Trump’s business deals, discuss his record. Marvin Roffman, an analyst, took Trump to court after getting fired for telling the Wall Street Journal that Trump’s plan for the Taj Mahal was financially irresponsible. Trump settled the case and Roffman won financial compensation. Prudence Gourguechon, past president of the American Psychoanalytic Association, argues that Trump views his business partners and even the banks which lend him money as expendable since he can just use them until he gets a better deal. “Donald Trump’s handshake, his signature and his word mean absolutely nothing in Atlantic City,” says Paul Friel, whose father’s cabinetry business was never paid in full for the work it completed on Trump Plaza.

INDIANA

GAMBLING GARY’S FUTURE: TRUMP AND HIS INDIANA CASINO ESCAPADE

Donald Trump applied for one of two licenses available. He made commitments to the community and its people — including a $10 million renovation of the city’s Sheraton Hotel. Trump was awarded a riverboat casino license, but when his riverboat failed to attract enough customers, he sold it and Trump Indiana, Inc. left town. The Sheraton Hotel was never renovated. Macarthur Drake is a former City Attorney of Gary, Indiana, who advised the mayor on applications for riverboat casino licenses. In this video, he describes the impact of Trump’s broken promises to Gary.

HOW TRUMP THE “SELF-PROMOTER” SOLD THE IDEA OF HIS CASINO TO GARY, INDIANA ON FALSE PROMISES

Chuck Hughes, a former city councilman in Gary, Indiana, describes how Donald Trump applied for a casino gaming license in Indiana and spun a “great yarn” of how the attractions at his riverboat casino would change lives in Gary. Trump made made flamboyant promises and a slick marketing campaign to get the Indiana Gaming Commission to select his bid. Trump’s promises were not a plan and his stories had no substance. He ended up “taking advantage of our community,” Chuck says.

HOW DONALD TRUMP BROKE PROMISES TO GARY, INDIANA WITH THE MISS USA PAGEANT

Chuck Hughes, a former city councilman in Gary, Indiana, discusses the big promises Donald Trump made when he brought the Miss USA Pageant to the city — and how Trump broke those promises. He failed to invest in the city like he said he would, and Gary, Indiana had to pay millions of dollars just to host the pageant. “It was great for Trump, but none of that had a positive impact on Gary, Indiana,” Chuck says.

NEVADA

DONALD TRUMP’S LAS VEGAS EMPLOYEES “SHOULD NOT BE TREATED AS SECOND-CLASS”

“We should not be treated as second-class employees,” says Maria Mendoza, an employee at Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas who decided to organize with her coworkers to fight for fair wages and working conditions. They joined Culinary Workers Union Local 226, but Donald Trump refuses to recognize the union or meet with union representatives.

DONALD TRUMP AND THE WORKERS HE’S EXPLOITING: ELEUTERIA BLANCO

Eleuteria Blanco describes excessive working conditions and abuse of power at Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, where she works. Eleuteria and her coworkers organized to join Culinary Workers Union Local 226 to fight for fair wages and working conditions. They make about $3 less than other employees on “the Strip,” she says. But Donald Trump refuses to recognize the union or meet with union representatives.

DONALD TRUMP AND THE WORKERS HE’S EXPLOITING: GEOCONDA ARGUELLO KLINE

Geoconda Arguello Kline is the Secretary-Treasurer of Culinary Union Local 226 in Las Vegas. Here she talks about Trump’s refusal to engage with his own employees to cooperate for fair wages and working conditions. If Trump really wants to change people’s lives as president, Geoconda says, he has 500 workers waiting for him to change their lives right now.

Correct the Record Releases New Web Videos Targeting Republican Senators for Defending and Praising Donald Trump http://correctrecord.org/correct-the-record-releases-new-web-videos-targeting-republican-senators-for-defending-and-praising-donald-trump/ Mon, 24 Oct 2016 12:07:39 +0000 http://correctrecord.org/?p=4462 Washington, D.C.—Correct The Record today released five new videos hitting five Republican Senate candidates for defending—and enabling—Donald Trump and his unhinged, authoritarian and bigoted presidential campaign. The videos are part of an effort by Correct The Record to hold Republican senatorial candidates accountable for supporting Trump’s misogyny, xenophobia and deeply paranoid mendacity. The videos feature footage of U.S. Senators Richard Burr (R-NC), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Pat Toomey (R-PA), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and U.S. Representative Todd Young (R-IN) defending—and even praising—Trump.

“Defending Donald Trump should be disqualifying. These Republican Senate candidates have betrayed the American people by aiding and abetting Donald Trump’s disturbing and disgusting presidential campaign,” said Brad Woodhouse, President of Correct The Record. “These five candidates have been Trump’s stooges for months—and we’re not going to let them get away with it. Correct The Record will expose these candidates as Trumpkins directly responsible for The Donald’s disgraceful political rhetoric and toxic policy positions.”

For months, these Republican elected officials have ignored their constituents and cravenly lined up behind Trump’s presidential bid. In the process, they have helped support—and legitimize—Trump’s deeply offensive attacks on women, individuals with disabilities, communities of color and our democracy itself. Just a few weeks ago, Sen. Ayotte said Trump “absolutely” was a role model for children and Sen. Rubio has proudly said “we have to make sure that Donald wins this election.” Sen. Toomey stood with Trump even after he mocked a reporter with disabilities, attacked immigrants and demonized Muslim Americans. Sen. Burr has gone even further saying Trump has “done a tremendous job.” And Indiana Senate candidate Todd Young continues to defend Trump even after the Republican nominee viciously attacked federal judge—and fellow Hoosier—Gonzalo Curiel for his Mexican heritage.

Watch the new videos:

For months, Correct The Record has held Trump accountable for his campaign of lies, bigoted rhetoric and relentless and disturbing attacks on our democracy. As part of CTR’s overall effort to elect Hillary Clinton our next president, Correct The Record will expand these efforts by exposing Republican Senate candidates’ records of defending, praising and enabling Trump. The American people deserve much better than Trump and his GOP enablers. Instead of candidates who will kowtow to an unhinged, serial liar, voters want leaders who will stand up for American families and work to build an economy where everyone can succeed.

CTR Statement On Donald Trump’s West Palm Beach Rally http://correctrecord.org/ctr-statement-on-donald-trumps-west-palm-beach-rally/ Thu, 13 Oct 2016 18:07:09 +0000 http://correctrecord.org/?p=4399 Washington, D.C.–Today, Correct The Record Communications Director Elizabeth Shappell released the following statement on Donald Trump’s rally in West Palm Beach, Florida:

“Donald Trump has officially gone full Breitbart. This was Trump’s most authoritarian and disturbing speech of his entire campaign—and demonstrated just how much his campaign has given up on winning over any new voters. In West Palm Beach, Trump monstrously called on his supporters to dig up dirt and go after the women who have accused him of sexual assault. He misogynistically denied attacking a People Magazine reporter by invoking her looks. Let’s not forget, Trump has literally bragged about kissing and groping women without their consent. Then, in his most blatantly dictatorial rhetoric yet, Trump once called for Hillary Clinton to be jailed and said a dark global conspiracy of bankers and the media is aligned against him. As his campaign melts down, Trump is retreating deeper and deeper into his dark, misogynistic, mendacious and perverse alternate reality.”

Statement from CTR President Brad Woodhouse on Donald Trump's Ambridge, PA rally http://correctrecord.org/4394-2/ Mon, 10 Oct 2016 21:00:51 +0000 http://correctrecord.org/?p=4394 Washington, D.C.—Today, Correct The Record President Brad Woodhouse released the following statement after Donald Trump’s rally in Ambridge, Pennsylvania.

“Donald Trump was vintage Donald Trump this afternoon. He deployed his tried and true, ‘I know you are, but what am I?’ tactic, claiming Hillary Clinton lied ‘so much’ at last night’s debate. In fact, that was Trump who lied over and over in St. Louis. He spent minutes going after the fire marshal for not allowing the ‘thousands’ of people outside into his rally and bragging, ‘I know a lot about fire and fire marshals.’ Trump praised WikiLeaks (and thereby Russian hacking) over and over again. He laughably called himself a ‘blue-collar worker’ when he was born a millionaire. Trump finally declared that ‘the last 72 hours has framed what this election is all about,’ and we couldn’t agree more. He has demonstrated over and over that he would be a disaster as president.”

Donald Trump has proved once again he is a vile disgusting pig who is unfit for office. From this day forward, every Republican official has a choice: stand with Donald Trump and his reprehensible comments about women, or rescind your endorsement. Speaker Paul Ryan and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus are scheduled to appear with Trump tomorrow. If they appear with Trump, it will mean every Republican up and down the ballot approves of Trump’s disgusting statements and behavior. Either Republicans reject Trump or put their party into political crisis.

Fact Checkers Agree: Pence Denied, Lied, and Pretended Trump (and Trump’s Words) Doesn’t Exist http://correctrecord.org/fact-checkers-agree-pence-denied-lied-and-pretended-trump-and-trumps-words-doesnt-exist/ Wed, 05 Oct 2016 14:05:33 +0000 http://correctrecord.org/?p=4374

Last night, Mike Pence spent an hour and a half pretending like his running mate was anyone other than Donald Trump. Pence denied Trump had said a multitude of offensive statements (he has), blatantly lied about Clinton-Kaine policies and overall ignored any question asking him to answer for Trump (which is his job as VP candidate last time we checked).

Fact checkers and columnists pointed out Mike Pence’s approach of running away from his running mate–“Trump Never Said Those Things He Said.”

Washington Post Fact Checker: Fact-checking the vice-presidential debate between Kaine and Pence

“Donald Trump during his campaign has called Mexicans rapists and criminals. He’s called women slobs, pigs, dogs, disgusting. I don’t like saying that in front of my wife and my mother. He attacked an Indiana-born federal judge and said he was unqualified to hear a federal lawsuit because his parents were Mexican. He went after John McCain, a POW, and said he wasn’t hero because he’d been captured. He said African-Americans are living in hell. And he perpetrated this outrageous and bigoted lie that President Obama is not a U.S. citizen. … And we don’t think that women should be punished, as Donald Trump said they should, for making the decision to have an abortion.”

—Kaine

Trump has, indeed, said all of those things.

USA Today: Fact check: Pence vs. Kaine in the VP debate

“Pence said ‘that’s nonsense’ after Kaine claimed Trump was proposing a ‘deportation force’ to ‘go house to house’ and send away millions of immigrants who are here illegally. Trump did say that.”

Politico: 6 things Trump definitely said that Pence claimed he didn’t

Scored on accuracy, however, Pence fares far worse. The main tenet of his strategy was to deny that Trump ever said these things to begin with — despite the fact that many of the statements were both real and a part of the public record.

Washington Post: Mike Pence can’t believe Tim Kaine would insult Donald Trump by quoting him

What were those insults Kaine was leveling? Here’s what he said immediately prior:

• “Donald Trump during his campaign has called Mexicans rapists and criminals.” This is true. Trump said during his campaign announcement that when Mexico “send its people” that “[t]hey’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”

• “He’s called women slobs, pigs, dogs, disgusting. I don’t like saying that in front of my wife and my mother.” Trump called Rosie O’Donnell a slob and a pig in 2007. He called O’Donnell a degenerate. He called Arianna Huffington a dog on Twitter.

• “He attacked an Indiana-born federal judge and said he was unqualified to hear a federal lawsuit because his parents were Mexican.” This happened earlier this year.

• “He went after John McCain, a POW, and said he wasn’t a hero because he’d been captured.” This isn’t exactly what Trump said. Trump said that McCain wasn’t a hero — but if he was, it’s because he was captured.

• “He said African Americans are living in hell.” Trump said this last week.

• “And he perpetrated this outrageous and bigoted lie that President Obama is not a U.S. citizen.” Trump hinted that President Obama might not be a citizen for years, from 2011 until January of this year.

There are no insults there by Kaine about Trump. Those are things Trump said.

Huffington Post: Mike Pence To America: Trump Never Said Those Things He Said

Donald Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R), spent much of the first and only vice presidential debate Tuesday night doing his damnedest to get Americans to forget all of the offensive things Trump has said.

Pence repeatedly tried to skirt around statements Trump actually said — or simply shook his head and ignored the question.

“I’m happy to defend [Trump],” Pence said.

But Pence rarely actually defended Trump. Instead, he dodged or outright denied his running mate’s statements.

U.S. News & World Report: Pence in Fantasy Land

But the most striking facet of the evening was how much Pence tried to pretend that the man leading his ticket, former reality television star Donald Trump, is either a conventional Republican or not in the race at all.

In this alternate universe – one I think Speaker of the House Paul Ryan also frequently visits – Trump has not insulted just about everyone who isn’t a member of his family, hasn’t cozied up to Russia and hasn’t laid out plans that would do great damage to the American economy. When Pence wasn’t outright lying about what his running mate has said, he simply ignored Trump’s designs for the country entirely.

NBC News: Split Decision: How Pence Helped Pence While Kaine Helped Clinton

Fact-checking the debate: Three times when Pence denied saying something that either he or Trump had actually said (or close to it)

And there’s a very good chance that Democrats end up winning the post-debate spin war after looking at the tale of the tape. There were at least three times when Pence denied or questioned that either he or Trump said something they actually said.

Example #1

KAINE: Donald Trump during his campaign has called Mexicans rapists and criminals. He’s called women slobs, pigs, dogs, disgusting… He attacked an Indiana-born federal judge and said he was unqualified to hear a federal lawsuit because his parents were Mexican. He went after John McCain, a POW, and said he wasn’t hero because he’d been captured… And he perpetrated this outrageous and bigoted lie that President Obama is not a U.S. citizen.

[snip]

PENCE: To be honest with you, if Donald Trump had said all of the things that you’ve said he said in the way you said he said them, he still wouldn’t have a fraction of the insults that Hillary Clinton leveled when she said that half of our supporters were a basket of deplorables. It’s — she said they were irredeemable, they were not American.

The record: When Trump announced his presidential bid, he said: “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” Trump did say a federal judge overseeing a lawsuit against him had a conflict of interest because of his Mexican heritage. Trump criticized McCain for being captured in war: “He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” And Trump did lead the “birther” crusade.

Example #2

KAINE: Well, this is one where we can just kind of go to the tape on it. But Governor Pence said, inarguably, Vladimir Putin is a better leader than President Obama.

PENCE: That is absolutely inaccurate.

KAINE: And — and — and I just think a guy who praises…

PENCE: He said he’s stronger — he’s been stronger on the world stage.

KAINE: No, he said leader. And if — and I’ll just say this, Governor.

PENCE: You just said better.

The record: Pence’s original quote wasn’t referring to the world stage, and he said that Putin has been a “stronger leader” than Obama. But he didn’t say “better” leader. Here’s what Pence has said: “I think it’s inarguable that Vladimir Putin has been a stronger leader in his country than Barack Obama has been in this country. And that’s going to change the day that Donald Trump becomes president.” And here’s what Trump has said on the matter: “Certainly, in that system, [Putin has] been a leader, far more than our president has been a leader.”

Example #3

PENCE: I’m very, very happy to defend Donald Trump. If he wants to take these one at a time, I’ll take them one at a time.

QUIJANO: I will give you an opportunity to do that.

KAINE: More nations should get nuclear weapons. Try to defend that.

PENCE: Don’t put words in my mouth. Well, he never said that, Senator.

The record: Back in a March debate, Trump did seem to suggest that more nations should have nuclear weapons, but he also appeared to contradict himself in the answer. The transcript:

TRUMP At some point we have to say, you know what, we’re better off if Japan protects itself against this maniac in North Korea, we’re better off, frankly, if South Korea is going to start to protect itself, we have…

COOPER: Saudi Arabia, nuclear weapons?

TRUMP: Saudi Arabia, absolutely.

COOPER: You would be fine with them having nuclear weapons?

TRUMP: No, not nuclear weapons, but they have to protect themselves or they have to pay us. Here’s the thing, with Japan, they have to pay us or we have to let them protect themselves.

COOPER: So if you said, Japan, yes, it’s fine, you get nuclear weapons, South Korea, you as well, and Saudi Arabia says we want them, too?

TRUMP: Can I be honest with you? It’s going to happen, anyway. It’s going to happen anyway. It’s only a question of time. They’re going to start having them or we have to get rid of them entirely.

And here’s what Trump said in an April 3, 2016 Fox interview:

TRUMP: So, North Korea has nukes. Japan has a problem with that. I mean, they have a big problem with that. Maybe they would in fact be better off if they defend themselves from North Korea.

WALLACE: With nukes?

TRUMP: Maybe they would be better off — including with nukes, yes, including with nukes.

Donald Trump's top lies at Retired American Warriors PAC event http://correctrecord.org/donald-trumps-top-lies-at-retired-american-warriors-pac-event/ Mon, 03 Oct 2016 16:03:59 +0000 http://correctrecord.org/?p=4363 Trump stumbles through national security event

In a rambling and incoherent appearance today at an event with the Retired American Warriors (RAW) PAC, Trump once again revealed just how little he knows about our military and national security. When asked about how he would defeat ISIS, Trump—who has no real plan to defeat the Islamic State—deflected by criticizing President Obama. He repeatedly disparaged the military and once again doubled down on his bigoted call for racial profiling. Trump even commented on the “newness” of Russia’s nuclear capability. We’re not even going to touch that one.

Here are Trump’s most egregious lies from today’s event:

LIE #1: TRUMP FALSELY CLAIMS THAT “OUR ARMED FORCES” ARE “DEPLETED”

THE LIE: TRUMP: “Speaking of failure, when we do our question and answer period, you look at what’s happened with our Navy in terms of the number of ships and our armed forces generally, how they are so depleted, how they are at almost record-setting lows and in some cases absolute record-setting lows, it is very very unfortunate and very very dangerous for our country.” [Herndon, VA, 10/3/16]

THE TRUTH: PolitiFact said that Donald Trump’s claim that our military has been “totally depleted” was untrue. “‘Our military’ has been ‘totally depleted.’ While military spending has decreased, the United States’ defense budget is larger than the next seven to eight countries combined. And while the number of ground troops and Navy ships have shrunk, size is no guarantee of military might. In fact, experts say the Army and Navy of today are much more capable than they were decades ago.” [PolitiFact, 6/22/16]

LIE #2: TRUMP FALSELY CLAIMS THAT OUR MILITARY IS “GOING AWAY”

THE LIE: TRUMP: “The Navy, Air Force, Marines. Everything is going away. At a time when certainly we are at a top priority for making sure that doesn’t happen. We are not respected to the extent that we were. We keep going like this, we won’t be respected at all. ” [Herndon, VA, 10/3/16]

THE TRUTH: PolitiFact: “Experts say the Army and Navy of today are much more capable than they were decades ago.” “‘Our military’ has been ‘totally depleted.’ While military spending has decreased, the United States’ defense budget is larger than the next seven to eight countries combined. And while the number of ground troops and Navy ships have shrunk, size is no guarantee of military might. In fact, experts say the Army and Navy of today are much more capable than they were decades ago.” [PolitiFact, 6/22/16]

LIE #3: TRUMP NONSENSICALLY SAYS THE U.S. SHOULD HAVE “KEPT THE OIL”

THE LIE: TRUMP: “And when it comes to the military, you know, I always say keep the oil. I said don’t go in. But I said keep the oil. Had we kept the oil, you wouldn’t have ISIS because they fueled their growth with the oil. ” [Herndon, VA, 10/3/16]

THE TRUTH: Washington Post Fact Checker said that Donald Trump’s claim that the U.S. “should have kept the oil in Iraq” was “nonsensical.” “‘I have long said that we should have kept the oil in Iraq.’ This is nonsensical. The Bush administration invested a lot of diplomatic effort in assuring Middle Eastern allies that the United States was not invading because of Iraq’s oil fields. Moreover, oil revenue was crucial to ensuring a functioning Iraqi state — which is why insurgents often targeted the oil sector in Iraq. In any event, seizing the oil of a sovereign nation after invading it would be considered a ‘grave breach’ of the Geneva Convention, one of the cornerstones of international law, as well as other international agreements. Maybe Trump’s staff should arrange a tutorial on international law.” [Washington Post, 8/16/16]

Donald Trump’s assertion that the U.S. should have taken Iraqi oil was a plan that would be in violation of the Geneva Conventions. “Seizing Middle Eastern oil is a decade-old Trump idea, but it contradicts both his own positions as well as international law. Trump is right that oil is a major source of funding for the terrorist group, but he’s not the only one aware of this. The United States has been targeting ISIS’ oil assets since the beginning of the air campaign in 2014. Trump did not detail how the United States would have been able to take and control the oil fields of a sovereign country, but it would have required invading Iraq (which Trump falsely says he was against from the beginning), maintaining a U.S. presence there and convincing the Iraqi government to give up their claims on their own resources. And there’s also the Geneva Conventions, which Trump has already proposed to violate by calling for the deaths of families of terrorists. International law prohibits destroying or seizing enemy property.” [PolitiFact, 8/15/16]
